Opening : 13.09.21
Duration : 13.09.21-14.11.21

WT Foundation is pleased to announce Seven trees, Yellow Pond, a solo exhibition of paintings by Ben Sledsens..

Sledsens’ paintings exist in a long tradition of painting that references Henri Matisse, Henri Rousseau and Pieter Bruegel the Elder, yet his works are a part of a bigger utopian universe that is all his own. His majestic paintings in Seven trees, Yellow Pond exemplify the visual language the artist has created over the span of his career to date, including expressive depictions of nature and figures, rich in vibrant colors. Within these paintings, the artist offers viewers an opportunity to escape their daily routine and enter a fantastical universe that is both vivid and serene.
The artist’s utilization of a vast spectrum of colors from one painting to another within the exhibition illuminates his technical skills as a colorist. For example, the title painting of the exhibition, Seven trees, Yellow Pond, depicts undulating green trees with hints of yellow and blue in the pond beyond them, while Red Trunk portrays an opening within an all-red voluminous forest.
Another focal point of Sledsens’ practice is the female figure, which like the landscape, has a long tradition in art history. In select works, the artist places the figure within his composition as she engages with nature in a variety of manners. Sledsens paints the imagined figures from memory and a viewer can easily envision themselves in her position. In Girl in Tree, a woman sits on a high up branch snacking on an apple. The painting is a nod to The Peasant and the Birdnester (1568), an iconic work by Bruegel the Elder depicting a monumental figure pointing over his shoulder to alert the viewer of a robber stealing eggs from a bird’s nest.
During a time in which we have spent an extended period in our homes, Sledsens’ paintings offer a temporary escape to a Utopian World in which the artist would like to live, which provides us with a much needed meditative pause from reality.
